Black Cat - Metaphorically Speaking

Mayday Parade calls the song that I chose “Black Cat”. It is one of my favorite songs. The beat is lively and it feels like an anthem song. My analysis of this song is it’s about a boy who was left by a girl that was his everything. He gets a new girlfriend and the old girlfriend founds out and wants to destroy his life because she still loves him. Although there aren’t many similes in this song, it has a handful of metaphors. One metaphor I found is “but stop the tape.” There is no literal tape but it’s meant to be like “hold on for a second.” It’s meant as a pause in the story for the narrator to remember past events. A big simile in this song is in the chorus. It says “you’re like a black cat with a black backpack full of fireworks and you’re gonna burn the city down right now.” As interesting as it would be, there is no actual black cat burning down cities with fireworks. A black cat signifies bad luck so the narrator is saying his old girlfriend was a bad experience and was bad for him. The second part of that is “…full of fireworks and you’re gonna burn the city down right now.” I don’t think, hopefully not, that the ex-girlfriend is actually going to burn the city down but she is going to try to ruin his life because he is in another relationship. Another metaphor is “and this jealous actress has a habit of making things sound way too tragic.” The girlfriend isn’t actually an actress but she is simply blowing the whole situation out of proportion. This song captures the feelings of breakup in a metaphoric manner.
